June Book Club Meeting: Following the Drum

June 17, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Free

The June meeting of the Washington Crossing Historic Park Book Club is set for Monday, June 17, at 5:30 PM in the Visitor Center.

In this meeting, museum curator Kimberly McCarty will lead a discussion of the club’s next selection: Following the Drum:  Women at the Valley Forge Encampment by Nancy K. Loane. This meeting will cover Chapters 1-3.

Following the Drum tells the story of the forgotten women who spent the winter of 1777-78 with the Continental Army at Valley Forge. While many women worked as the army’s washerwomen, nurses, cooks, or seamstresses, others were of higher status: they traveled with Washington’s entourage when the army headquarters shifted from place to place and served the general as valued cooks, laundresses, or housekeepers. In Following the Drum, readers will learn of the 1777-78 encampment’s devastating effect on the area’s farm families, meet the women and ladies who accompanied and aided the soldiers, and discover a Valley Forge that many never knew existed.

Participation is free and open to all. Members should provide their own books. To register, please call the park Visitor Center at 215-493-4076.
