Camp Life: Enduring the 1776 Bucks County Encampments
The desperate condition of the soldiers who crossed the Delaware River on December 25, 1776 has become as legendary as the crossing itself. Less well-known are the conditions under which these soldiers lived in the weeks preceding the crossing. On Sunday, December 3 at 7 PM, Park Military Historian Colin Zimmerman will examine the reality of the difficult and complex encampments and how they impacted what would prove to be a decisive military stroke in the American War for Independence. Our annual wreath workshop is coming up! Join us for an afternoon of wreath and swag making on Monday, December 4 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM in the Thompson - Neely Grist Mill with Historical Horticulturist, Anna Davis. Create a special decoration - we will provide one natural grapevine wreath frame per person, varied fresh greens, and some decorations. Feel free to bring additional embellishments to add a personal touch. Attendees may want to bring gardening gloves and wire cutters. Each December, thousands of people gather on the banks of the Delaware River to watch the reenactment of George Washington’s daring 1776 Christmas night river crossing. During the event, several hundred reenactors in Continental military dress listen to an inspiring speech by General Washington and then row across the river in replica Durham boats. The first opportunity to witness the reenactment is Sunday, December 10, from 11 AM to 3 PM in the Washington Crossing Historic Park’s Historic Village. George Washington’s Birthday Party
Come celebrate George Washington’s 292nd birthday on Sunday, February 18 from 11 AM to 2 PM at Washington Crossing Historic Park (PA)! During the day, various children’s activities will be offered. At 1:45 PM, visitors will gather in the park’s visitor center to sing happy birthday to George and watch him use his sword to cut his cake, which is donated by The Caketeria in Newtown. Admission is free. Children 12 and under are encouraged to bring handmade birthday cards to the party to give to the General.
