DESCRIPTION:This event is in-person only at the Visitor Center Auditorium. Registration required. \nJoin us for a 1 hour lecture on Jack D. Warren Jr.’s new book on the American Revolution. \nPublished under the auspices of the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati\, Freedom: The Enduring Importance of the American Revolution is a narrative history of the War for Independence. It tells the pivotal story of the courageous men and women who risked their lives to create a new nation based on the idea that government should serve people and protect their freedom. Written for Americans intent on understanding our national origins but also appropriate for teachers and secondary classrooms\, Freedom argues that the American Revolution is the central event in our history: the turning point between our colonial origins and our national experience. This volume includes 167 full-color paintings\, maps\, illustrations\, and photos—many seen only in historical institutions nationwide! \nThe narrative in FREEDOM spans from the American Revolution’s origins in the nature of colonial British America—a society in which freedom was limited and in which everyone was the subject of a distant monarch—through the crisis in the British Empire that followed the French and Indian War\, to the events of the War for Independence itself\, and ultimately to the creation of the first great republic in modern history. Ours is a shared\, inspiring story of how Americans\, united in their fight for freedom\, became one nation with a shared history and national identity. It is a testament to the power of unity and shared values. It is the story of a generation of founders who expressed ideals of liberty\, equality\, natural and civil rights\, and responsible citizenship: ideals that have shaped our history and will shape our future—and the world’s future. \nAbout the Author \nJack D. Warren\, Jr.\, is a native of Washington\, DC\, whose work focuses on the enduring achievements of the American Revolution. He served on the faculty of the University of Virginia\, where he was an editor of The Papers of George Washington. Subsequently\, he was the executive director of The Society of Cincinnati and the founding director of The American Revolution Institute. His books include The Presidency of George Washington and America’s First Veterans. He and his wife\, Janet\, live in Alexandria\, Virginia. \nThis event will be a 1 hour lecture by author Jack D. Warren Jr\, discussing the book\, his research\, as well as an opportunity for questions and book signing. \nProceeds will support the Friends of Washington Crossing Park and the Princeton Regional Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution Education Fund. \nTickets can be purchased both with or without a book. The book will also be available for sale in the Visitor Center gift shop\, if supplies allow.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Celebration 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in the Confederate states. It took until June 19\, 1865 for Union troops to arrive in Galveston\, Texas to enforce the proclamation and ensure the freedom of those people who were enslaved. Slavery as an institution did not end in the United States as a whole until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in December\, 1865. \nIn honor of Juneteenth\, Washington Crossing Historic Park will host several free special events and activities on Sunday\, June 23 from 3 to 7 PM. We will educate visitors about the contributions of Black American soldiers during the Revolutionary War and Civil War as well as what Juneteenth is and why its legacy is so important today. \nSchedule: \n\n3:00-4:00 PM lectures. Noah Lewis is a living historian and portrayer of “Ned Hector”\, a black revolutionary war hero. He will be presenting on the contributions of Black Soldiers during the revolution. 1st Sgt Algernon Ward Jr. is a historical reenactor and President of the 6th Regiment United States Colored Troops. He will be presenting on the contributions of black soldier’s during the Civil War\, Juneteenth\, and its legacy.\n4:00-5:00 PM living history\n5:00-7:00 PM concert\n\nThe Quake Band\, a Philadelphia based\, premier high energy dance band offering the finest in great live musical entertainment\, will provide live music. SUMMARY:The Art of Flower Pressing
DESCRIPTION:Learn the beautiful art of flower pressing and preserve a piece of summer forever! Park horticulturist\, Anna Davis\, will teach the various methods of pressing during this workshop. The class will assemble their own press so they can and continue what they have learned at home. Once presses are assembled\, we will proceed to our 18th century kitchen garden to collect two to three flowers to use in your new press.  \nThe last hour of the workshop we will discuss various ways to use pressed flowers creatively at home. Then\, using pre-pressed flowers and some beautiful vintage paper samples\, we will create and design two botanical bookmarks to adorn your latest novel.  \nThere are a maximum of 12 spots available. The cost is $80 per person. All proceeds from the Garden Days Program Series go back into the Historical Garden Program run by the non-profit Friends of Washington Crossing Park. \nRegister Here
