Cavity Nest Improvement Project

February 1, 2021 - February 10, 2021

$10

Would you like to bring nature closer to home while helping to improve the habitat for wildlife at Washington Crossing Historic Park? The park is currently home to 25 cavity nest boxes that you may have noticed during your walks in the park. Many of our boxes need to be replaced after this nesting season. You can help by registering for your own cavity nest kit!

Each kit costs $10 and directly helps us improve and add to the cavity nest rearing program at the park. Your kit will contain the supplies needed to build your own personal cavity nest kit, which can be erected on your own property or at your house! The kits are built for smaller birds that nest in cavities, including but not limited to Eastern bluebirds, tree swallows, house wrens, and black-capped chickadees.

To donate and receive your own cavity nest kit, please email park naturalist Matthew Truesdale at mtruesdale@pa.gov. He will arrange a time for you to visit the park and pick up your kit. (Kits cannot be mailed.) Please bring cash or a check made out to Friends of Washington Crossing Park.

Registration is due by February 10, 2021.

As an added bonus, all participants will be invited to a live virtual program with Matthew on Friday, February 19 at 6 PM. This Zoom talk will explore:

  • How and where to hang your nest box
  • How to maintain your box
  • Species and identification
  • DCNR’s Cavity Nest Monitoring Program

Please note: if you do not live close enough to Washington Crossing Historic Park to pick up a kit but you would still like to participate in the Zoom talk on February 19, please email Matt Truesdale at mtruesdale@pa.gov to make arrangements.
