Tour with the Curator: McConkey’s Ferry Inn
August 11, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Free
Washington Crossing Historic Park’s 2019 Evening with the Curator series continues on Sunday, August 11 at 1:30 PM with a free guided tour of McConkey’s Ferry Inn in the Historic Village.
Park curator Kimberly McCarty will lead a guided tour of the building. From McConkey’s Ferry on December 25, 1776, hours before the crossing, Washington wrote to Colonel Cadwalader: “I am determined as the night is favorable to cross the River…”
Capacity is limited to the first 15 registrants. Registration opens July 1 and closes August 9 or when capacity is reached. To register, please call the Visitor Center at 215-493-4076.
The first ferry building was built in 1752, but only the basement kitchen remains. The current inn was built in several stages; the west side, the one farthest from the river, was built around 1790 and includes the original basement.
The building represents a typical country inn or tavern of the Revolutionary era and suggests the variety of amenities that would have been available to travelers at that time.
