Accessible History
The Friends of Washington Crossing Park are proud to introduce Accessible History, a new multi-sensory interpretive experience designed specifically for visitors who are blind or have low vision. Developed in partnership with accessibility experts at Philly Touch Tours, this program offers a dynamic, inclusive way to engage with one of America’s most iconic historic sites. Using thoughtfully designed interpretive elements and descriptive dialogue, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the story behind George Washington’s daring 1776 crossing of the Delaware River, an event that helped change the course of the American Revolution.
At the core of this experience is a bronze relief of Emanuel Leutze’s famous painting “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” crafted by Philadelphia artist Ellen Qiong Schicktanz. Created specifically for tactile interaction, this piece gives three-dimensional depth to the original artwork, allowing it to be explored and experienced through guided touch.
Participants will also have the chance to handle carefully-curated reproduction items that help bring the story of the Ten Crucial Days of the American Revolution to life. From uniforms, to muskets, to rations, these items allow visitors to experience the stories, scents and textures of the Revolutionary era.
The entire experience takes place at the fully ADA-accessible Visitor Center, with the option to step outdoors to experience the natural surroundings of the Delaware River as well. Our hope is that all visitors, regardless of ability, can engage with history in meaningful ways. We believe that representation and access are essential to building a more inclusive community and our goal is to provide an interpretive program that is welcoming, empowering, and educational.
These programs run approximately 2 hours and offer one of the most unique and in-depth experiences available at any historic site in our region.
Benefits of This Program
While this experience is designed with visitors who are blind or have low vision in mind, its multi-sensory, hands-on approach offers meaningful benefits for other groups as well. Neurodiverse learners, kinesthetic learners, older adults, and individuals with limited mobility can thrive in an environment that blends hearing, smell, and touch with guided exploration. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a student, or simply curious about the Revolutionary War, Accessible History invites you to experience the past in a whole new way.
