Durham Boat Project

In partnership with the Independence Seaport Museum, the Friends of Washington Crossing Park are constructing a full-scale, 40-foot replica of a Durham boat, the same type George Washington’s army used to cross the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776, as a centerpiece of our expanded interpretive offerings for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

The project began in May 2025, at the ISM Seaport Boat Shop in Philadelphia, where visitors are invited to follow the build through behind-the-scenes tours, monthly Table Saw Talks, and hands-on pop-up programs. The boat is being constructed using traditional materials and techniques, enhanced with modern features for durability and ADA accessibility.

Once installed along the riverbank and linked by a new interpretive trail developed with DCNR and the 106 Group, the replica will allow visitors to climb aboard and imagine the crossing for themselves, enriching our Colonial Days, annual crossing reenactments, daily guided tours, and Rescuing the Revolution field trips that reach over 10,000 students each year. Estimated Completion: June 2026
