Washington Crossing Riverbank Cleanup – August 2024
August 24 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Help NJ and PA prepare for America’s 250th on August 24 from 10:00 AM -1:00 PM! Recent storms and flooding have brought brush and trash to General Washington’s Embarkation and Landing sites along the Delaware River. As our area prepares for 2026 and the country’s 250th anniversary, Washington Crossing Historic Park in PA and Washington Crossing State Park in NJ are working hard to prepare for the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected at our shores. We invite you to join us in getting these nationally-known historic sites ready for their close ups!
This year we’ll focus on the Pennsylvania side, as well as the island behind which Washington may have hidden boats before crossing. Meet in front of the PA Visitors Center at 1112 River Road in Washington Crossing, PA, where we’ll provide coffee and pastries. We’ll have two levels of activity to choose from:
- In the River: Wear your water shoes to wade along the banks of the Delaware (no hip boots or waders please) and pull away limbs and brush.
- By the River: Stay high and dry on the water’s edge to help detangle and carry debris to removal areas. Wear sturdy sneakers or boots, and pants that can get nice and dirty.
This event is rain or shine, but will be canceled for severe weather. We’ll supply bug spray, but be on the lookout for poison ivy, slippery rocks, variable water levels, and river currents. Space is limited, volunteers must be 16 or older, and need to register here.
