Interpretive Experience for the Blind & Low-Vision Community

Friends of Washington Crossing Park (FWCP), in collaboration with Philly Touch Tours is proud to introduce a multi-sensory interpretive experience at Washington Crossing Historic Park, designed especially for visitors who are blind or visually impaired. This innovative program transforms our fully ADA-accessible visitor center into a rich sensory storytelling space, featuring tactile exploration, audio narration, and scent-based elements that allow deeper engagement with history.

At the core of this experience is a newly donated bronze relief of Emanuel Leutze’s “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” crafted by Philadelphia artist Ellen Qiong Schicktanz. Schicktanz, a naturalized U.S. citizen, created this piece specifically for tactile interaction. The design mirrors her existing cast installed at the Museum of the American Revolution, ensuring historical accuracy with sensory inclusivity.

By incorporating this richly layered design, we transform traditional visual displays into accessible, active engagement with history. Visitors can touch the contours of the relief, hear contextual narratives, and experience the scents and textures of the Revolutionary era. This experience underscores FWCP’s commitment to accessibility, ensuring that every visitor can connect meaningfully with the powerful story of Washington’s crossing and its ongoing impact on our nation.
