Lecture – “Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War” with Friederike Baer

On Sunday, October 15 at 1:30 PM, author Friederike Baer will discuss her book Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War. The book examines the experiences of the estimated 30,000 German soldiers – collectively known as Hessians – that participated in the war on the British side. In 2002, Dr. Baer received a Ph.D. in early American history from Brown University. She served as a project archivist at the American Philosophical Society. Less well-known are the conditions under which these soldiers lived in the weeks preceding the crossing. First Crossing of 2023

Each December, thousands of people gather on the banks of the Delaware River to watch the reenactment of George Washington’s daring 1776 Christmas night river crossing. During the event, several hundred reenactors in Continental military dress listen to an inspiring speech by General Washington and then row across the river in replica Durham boats. The first opportunity to witness the reenactment is Sunday, December 10, from 11 AM to 3 PM in the Washington Crossing Historic Park’s Historic Village.
