Charcoal Burn

May 11 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Washington Crossing Historic Park and many volunteers will recreate the “lost art” of turning wood into charcoal, just as the furnace colliers did over a century ago. The continuous demonstration will begin Saturday at 12:00pm with preparation of the hearth, stacking of the wood, and covering the pit with leaves and dirt.

The lighting off of the pit will take place about 1:00pm. The pit will burn continuously into Sunday morning, and will end with raking the coal out on Sunday morning beginning at 9:00am. Throughout the burn, “colliers” will be available to talk about the process while tending the pit.
